3141 Assistive Technology of around Me

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

There are a lot of assistive technologies around us. Of course, both physically handicapped persons and the normal persons use. So let me talk about Assistive Technologies.

There are three assistive technologies I like. First is a remote control device. If you placed the remote control on near you, you can do all tasks in your home without moving. The second is an elevator. If there is not elevator, physically handicapped persons can’t move to another floor. The third is reading glasses for the aged. I think this is the most useful tool for the aged. Such useful tools are typical Assistive Technologies.

Although my grandfather became handicapped, these assistive technologies helped him and more comfortable his life.

3120 A Hearing Aid

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

Let me introduce a hearing aid. This instrument is one of the assistive technologies.   A hearing aid that was made for hearing handicapped persons is a machine that makes people to hear sound or voices.  A hearing aid made for people with difficulty in hearing can catch sound or voices.  Also it can cut noises.

Recently a digital model hearing aid is the mainstream.  The digital model hearing aid has its software program that changes special property of sounds, and that adjustment can operate very simple and impromptu. That function is very wonderful!

I believe that it will develop more and more in the future.

3149 A Finger Reader

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

Do you know “FingerReader,” a device like a ring?  If you put it on your finger like a ring, it reads printed texts out loud by a loaded camera.  The FingerReader’s voice is mechanical and inaudible and the researchers are improving its quality.  It doesn’t handle small texts, for example, on a small medicine bottle or baseball game scores on a newspaper, but it can read 12+point texts.  If your finger lifts the line, it informs that.  The researchers plan to develop it not only for visual impairment people but also for all people, for example they add a function of translation.

3134 Assistive Powered Exoskeleton

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

A powered exoskeleton is used to wear to the surface of the body like wear clothes.  The user can get so much power than the ordinary person by the equipment.  Old person can also walk smoothly by wearing.  Bedridden will also disappear.  This equipment is developing rapidly due to the demand from the society.  In fact, Japan will stuck with problem of old person.  However, this equipment can be help solving these problems.

A powered exoskeleton is also a help for people with disabilities.  People with disabilities of foot use a wheelchair today.  However, if people with disabilities of foot use a powered exoskeleton, they can live more happily.  Powered exoskeleton has variety of potentials like this.  Iron Man will appear in the near future.

3115 The Springboard Lite

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

Assistive technology has several devices that help people who are non-verbal.  One of those is the Springboard Lite.  It is used by those who can’t speak and have learning disability.  This device helps them to communicate with others.  Many words are recorded in it, and when people touch the screen, it speaks what they want to say.  It is easy to carry because the size of it is relatively compact.

Thanks to this device, many people having troubles in speaking can tell their feelings and what they want to.  So I think that the Springboard Lite is one of the great assistive technologies.

3135 A Wheelchair

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

A wheelchair for those with a disability has normal wheelchair, athletic wheelchair, electric wheelchair, reclining wheelchair and so on.

Wheelchairs enable handicapped person to do many complicated problem.  For example, they can play many sports, such as tennis, and basketball with an athletic wheelchair.  Practically, an athletic wheelchair is used in the Paralympics.  In addition, a beach wheelchair is gaining popularity.  The handicapped person is able to control difficult topography of the sand by the beach wheelchair.

In short, assistive technology for daily living can enhance the independence, dignity and safety of people.

3133 Universal Design

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

The assistive technology which I find on the internet is “Chester Creek Kinderboard”. This technology contains a lot of wonderful idea.

Chester Creek’s™ KinderBoard™ is a large-key computer keyboard that can assist children with vision or motor-skill impairment, and is an excellent first keyboard for any child. The KinderBoard™ has big 1 inch oversized keys and large, bold, easy-to-read numbers and letters.

A lot of people who have handicap have been helped by this technology.
Whether you are handicapped or not, we can use this tool. This is the point which I am interested in. I think, if the idea increase in the future, social participation with disabilities will be promoted.

3148 A Hearing Aid

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

A hearing aid is an electroacoustic device which assists hearing of the hearing-impaired.  A hearing aid does not only have the function of increasing volume but also function of clearing to make it easy to hear.  It has various kinds, for example, ITE(In The Ear), BTE(Behind The Ear), BAHA(Bone Anchored Hearing Aids) and so on.  ITE is a type to cover up an external ear, and BTE is a type to hook behind an external ear.  BAHA is a type to implant in the side of head and it transmits sounds using bone conduction.  Recently, while performance increases, it is downsized and placed importance on fashionability.

3121 Electronic pointing devices of Assistive Technology

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

Electronic
pointing devices
—used to control the cursor on the screen
without use of hands. Devices used include ultrasound, infrared beams, eye
movements, nerve signals, or brain waves.

There are many disability people all over the world.
They suffer from disability. If disabled people operate this electronic
pointing devices system, they have more freedom. They can’t move their body, but
they can operate computers thanks to electronic pointing device.

For example, let me explain Apple’s assistive
technology. Their items enable disability people to operate computers. For
example, the Voice Control system likes Siri. Disability people who can’t move
their arms can operate thanks to voice control systems. Assistive technology
enables disability people to run computer systems.

3137 Enable Talk

2014 年 5 月 28 日 水曜日

This technology enable them to talk with people who have hearing problems.
They usually use sign language to talk, but people who don’t have hearing problems and cannot understand sign language.
These gloves convert sign language intosound.  A sensor recognizes motions of hands and fingers to send signals to a smartphone.  The application of a smartphonetranslates them into various languages, so we enjoy talking to anyone in spite of hearing problems.  In addition, its current price is cheaper than it was, so it is easy to buy for deaf people.

Thistechnology was developed by Ukrainian students.
Now they are developing into a practical use.  I hope the technology spreads more and eases
problems of handicapped people.
