Assistive technology is a generic term used for a wide range of software and hardware designed for disabled people to assist with everyday tasks in both work and home life. Assistive technologies can be standalone products that serve specific discrete functions, products that provide access to other devices, particularly computers, or technologies that are built into mainstream products to enhance their accessibility. Assistive technology plays a key role in breaking down barriers for individuals who have sensory, physical or cognitive difficulties, impairments and disabilities to fully participate in society

3111 A Wheelchair

I think many assistive technology exist all over the world. Today let me introduce the wheelchair!

If we break a leg or can’t move the lower half of the body, we use a wheelchair. The price is from 10
thousand to 3 million. Have you ever used the wheelchair?

My cousin broke a leg when he practiced Judo.
I also practiced Judo. I often went to hospital to see him. I pushed a wheelchair
for you. Then, I thought if wheelchairs don’t exist, it is too hard for him to
walk only himself. In order to walk easily, wheelchairs are necessary.

3144 A Problem of The Hearing-Aid

There are about 300 thousand people with hearing difficulties in Japan. However, it is less than 1/4 people who uses the hearing-aid. The diffusion rate of a Japanese hearing-aid is lower than foreign countries.  Denmark and Germany have spread about twice as many as Japan.

There are three reasons why the hearing-aid isn’t popular in Japan. For the first reason, people don’t have a good impression with the hearing-aid.  For instance, they think that it makes a user look like an old person.  Secondly, everybody considers the hearing-aid is unrelated with themselves.  The last reason is that a hearing-impaired person doesn’t notice the loss of his hearing ability.  However, it isn’t always bad.  The high-performance hearing-aid made in Japan can improve their daily life.

The more you consider the hearing-aid as a familiar thing, the more it will spread.

In these years, a lot of assistive technologies have been invented. A wheelchair is one of the assistive technologies. It is a welfare equipment for those who cannot walk or stand on their feet. In general, it has two big wheels like a bicycle and two small mobile wheels. Those four wheels enable people to keep balance.
Wheelchairs have been evolving. A special wheelchair has enabled people to move much easier. This is a great invention. Also, a special wheelchair has enabled those who have an injury or disease to play sports and so on.

If you have visual problems, how do you do? Vision loss, low vision, and visual impairment are terms that are described a wide range of vision problems. Sometimes there is a vision loss because of problems with the eye, and sometimes vision loss is caused by problems in the brain. I think if you have vision problems, you should have hard times in daily life. Then, I recommend “Braille”.
Braille is a writing system used by the blind and the visually impaired. It is traditionally written in embossed paper. It is called “Ten-ji” in Japan. Braille-users can understand text translated in brain thanks to refreshable braille displays. I think Braille is the best assistive technology.

We are conscious of time every day. We can check the time easily by looking at a clock, a cellphone and so on. But it is not easy for the blind to check the time.
A good news is the product called “Talking Watch.” This is a time keeping device that announces the time to users. The blind can check the time by hearing the time announced with a press of a button. You can choose a model to your needs: time only, an hourly time signal, talking alarms, and calendar. Surprisingly we can buy this watch at low cost. It is very useful for them.

An assistive technology for sports is an area of technology design that is growing. Assistive technology is the device created to enable the handicapped to exercise. Now at first there were a lot of wonderful devices at sports scenes.  Assistive devices can help exercise and training.

A sport wheelchair is a typical device. Sport wheelchairs are designed for specific sports. For example, basketball, curling, and tennis. These wheelchairs are developed for such people. Moreover, there is a handcycle for the handicapped to enjoy cycling.

Finally, I hope people who have disability can play sport more easily. And I hope them enjoy sports in future. These wonderful technologies will make many people happy.
